Backstage Behavior
Listen, it’s a pretty busy life opening a new show, keeping Margaret in pencils — you know, just being me, the effervescent Marty Schmelky.
But let me tell you something, if you don’t find a quiet moment throughout the day to give yourself some Schmelky-time, you’re gonna go nuts.
Like this:
What a serene moment before the show, right? WRONG. The things you can’t hear in this picture are Margaret’s nagging, some clown’s preshow ritual of listening to songs about tigers’ eyes and my own booming voice telling that guy (a dancer named DeWitt Fleming, Jr.) he better hurry up, I don’t care what kind of “precision” is necessary for mascara, I got a curtain to lift!
You know what my quiet time is? When it’s not quiet! I like the roar of the crowd, the sound of the popcorn, the nervous chatter before a show — if I could get some honking horns and sirens to play every time you visit this page, I would!
If you wanna contribute to the sounds around Banana Shpeel, show me your laugh here — you could win a trip to see the show. You’re welcome!
